The Yoda Achieve Your Goals Column – Part I: Secret Yedi Mind Tricks to Overcome Your Obstacles
In our new column “Achieve Your Goals” Master Yoda will teach you several obstacles on your way to fulfill your dreams. Well there is a lot of literature which tells you how to be more successful but we will focus in this column on the worst enemy on your way – YOURSELF.
There is a part of your personality which knows your weaknesses and insecurities and it tries to manipulate you on your way. The good thing is that we will defeat this part together. But as a good team we both have to work on it, that means you have to be a part in our journey.
There are 5 Tools your personality uses to prevent you from achieving your goals.
Cynicism: Nothing is perfect. A good excuse for almost everything, don’t you think? Who hasn’t caught oneself saying, “This is way to complicated for me…” ? The solution to this trick is pretty easy. Think about the result, maybe it won’t change your whole life but does it improve it partly? If the answer is yes give it a shot.
Negativism: Your mind tries to show you all the bad things which are correlated to your new action. So e.g. why should you quit smoking when everybody around you will still poison your air? The dangerous thing is that your subconscious mind believes the stories you tell it. Unfortunately your subconsciousness starts to change your behaviour and attitude. The good thing is there are at least as many good things in our world as bad things. You can decide on which parts you want to focus.
Defeatism: The voice in your head will try to convince you that the fault lies inside your personality. This will create a feeling of insecurity and low self esteem. Maybe you hear yourself saying, “I’m not able to do this because I’m not trained enough”. Now it is important that you convince yourself, that nothing can stop you on your way. Increase your efforts, believe in yourself and you will be rewarded.
Escapism: Back in my studies I remember the times where my flat has always been the cleanest. Guess what, this times always have been very close to my exams. New challenges cause feelings of discomfort. Instead of focusing on the really important things in our lives, we tend to give unimportant things higher priorities. Ask yourself, “Is this really important or is it just an excuse to do s.th. else.?” After a while you will see how pleasant it is to stay on the path where you felt discomfort initially.
Delayism: There just seems to be not the right moment, “I would have done this but XY was missing”. Evaluate if the reason is legitimate, be aware if you are working against or for you. Most reasons are just made up by you to have an excuse for not doing s.th.
Now you know the weapons of your mind, it will be much more easy to spot when your personality tries to trick you the next time. Don’t see this part of your personality as your enemy. Instead be aware of this mechanisms and use them for you. In other words use the force!
In the next part of the column we will take a closer look at a powerful Jedi tool to guide your subconsciousness.
